Bourbon Peppermint Hot Chocolate

For many of us, enjoying hot chocolate alone or together with friends and family is a holiday tradition. I love curling up in bed under a warm blanket and sipping on hot chocolate while watching holiday movies on tv.  As much as I love the classic hot chocolate,  I wanted to put a holiday and grown up spin on this popular favorite so added a skosh of bourbon and peppermint schnapps.

This bourbon peppermint hot chocolate recipe is to die for! The combination of dark chocolate, peppermint schnapps, sea salt and bourbon leaves a minty yet sweet and creamy aftertaste and will warm up your winter days from the inside out. It’s the perfect post-dinner cocktail. Give this recipe a try for the upcoming Thanksgiving weekend and serve to guests 21+ and over.


Ingredients


  • ⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • a dash of sea salt
  • ⅓ cup boiling water
  • 3½ cups 2% reduced fat milk
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cups peppermint schnapps
  • 2 tbsps half and half (optional for extra creaminess)
  • 1/2 cup bourbon
  • whipped cream (for topping)
  • dark chocolate shavings (for topping)


Instructions

Step 1. Add cocoa powder, sugar, and salt to a medium saucepan and stir together.

Step 2. Stir in the boiling water. Once the cocoa powder and sugar fully dissolves, put over stovetop burner on medium heat.

Step 3. Add milk and let it heat up a bit while stirring occasionally for 2-3 minutes. Don’t scorch it though. You should only be warming up the milk.

Step 4. Once warm enough or at your desired heated temperature, remove from heat and add in bourbon, peppermint schnapps, half and half (optional), and vanilla extract.
